Samelson was born on September 23, 1923, in Breslau, [German Reich](/source/Weimar_Republic) (today [Wrocław](/source/Wroc%C5%82aw), Poland).<ref name=ap/> Prohibited by the laws of [Nazi Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany) from attending any German universities, he instead attended a [photography](/source/photography) school in [Munich](/source/Munich), where he later worked in a factory with [prisoners of war](/source/prisoners_of_war). After [World War II](/source/World_War_II) ended, he began working for the [United States Army](/source/United_States_Army). In 1952, he immigrated to the [United States](/source/United_States), following his older brother [Hans](/source/Hans_Samelson). He went on to receive his [Ph.D.](/source/Ph.D.) in psychology from the [University of Michigan](/source/University_of_Michigan) in 1956.<ref name=psytalk/> He joined the faculty of [Kansas State University](/source/Kansas_State_University) in 1957, where he remained until retiring as Professor in 1990.<ref name=ap/>

Samelson died on March 16, 2015, in [Manhattan, Kansas](/source/Manhattan%2C_Kansas).<ref name=ap/>
