# Franklin Range

The **Franklin Range** is a small [mountain range](/source/Mountain_range) on [Vancouver Island](/source/Vancouver_Island), [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia), [Canada](/source/Canada), located just southwest of [Robson Bight](/source/Robson_Bight) and [Johnstone Strait](/source/Johnstone_Strait). It has an area of 200 km2 and is a subrange of the [Vancouver Island Ranges](/source/Vancouver_Island_Ranges) which in turn form part of the [Insular Mountains](/source/Insular_Mountains).[1] The range was named in 1861 by [Captain Richards](/source/George_Henry_Richards) for noted Arctic explorer [Rear Admiral Sir John Franklin](/source/John_Franklin) who died [exploring the Arctic](/source/Franklin's_lost_expedition) and his wife, [Lady Franklin](/source/Jane_Griffin_(Lady_Franklin)).[2]: 187 The [Cracroft Islands](/source/Cracroft_Islands) across Johnstone Strait were named for Sophia Cracroft, Sir John's niece who accompanied Lady Franklin on her journey around the world that brought them to British Columbia during the [Fraser Gold Rush](/source/Fraser_Gold_Rush) of 1858.[3]
