# Frank Shipp

**Frank Sterling** "**Skinny**" **Shipp** (July 23, 1884 – December 10, 1934) was an American [college football](/source/College_football) player and coach, and [Minor League Baseball](/source/Minor_League_Baseball) player. He played football at [Sewanee: The University of the South](/source/Sewanee:_The_University_of_the_South) in 1906 and 1907 and was a two-time [All-Southern](/source/College_Football_All-Southern_Team) selection. After playing for a year at [Texas A&M University](/source/Texas_A%26M_University) in 1909, Shipp, served as the head football coach at the [University of Arizona](/source/University_of_Arizona) for two seasons, from 1910 to 1911, compiling a record of 8–1–1.

## College football playing career

Shipp was a prominent [halfback](/source/Halfback_(American_football)) for the [Sewanee Tigers football](/source/Sewanee_Tigers_football) team of [Sewanee: The University of the South](/source/Sewanee:_The_University_of_the_South), selected second-team for an all-time Sewanee team.[1]

Shipp was selected [All-Southern](/source/College_Football_All-Southern_Team) at end by [Dan McGugin](/source/Dan_McGugin).[2]

### 1907

Shipp was selected [All-Southern](/source/College_Football_All-Southern_Team) in [1907](/source/1907_Sewanee_Tigers_football_team),[3] one of Sewanee's greatest years.[4][5]

## Baseball career

Shipp played minor league baseball for the [Denver Bears](/source/Denver_Bears_(Western_League)) in the [Western League](/source/Western_League_(1900%E2%80%931958)).[6]

## Coaching career

Shipp was hired as the head football coach at the [University of Arizona](/source/University_of_Arizona) in 1910 and retained the following season.[7][8]

## Late life and death

Shipp later worked at a private investigator in his hometown of [Chattanooga, Tennessee](/source/Chattanooga,_Tennessee) and was active in politics there as a [Democratic](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)). He ran for criminal court clerk in 1930 and sherriff in 1934, losing both elections. Shipp died of an apparent heart attack, on December 10, 1934, at his place of business, in Chattanooga.[9]
