From 1908 to 1912, he was the Secretary of the [Mississippi Senate](/source/Mississippi_State_Senate).<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /> From 1910 to 1914, he was the City Attorney of [Pontotoc](/source/Pontotoc%2C_Mississippi).<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /> He was elected to represent [Pontotoc County](/source/Pontotoc_County%2C_Mississippi) as a [Democrat](/source/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) in the [Mississippi House of Representatives](/source/Mississippi_House_of_Representatives) in 1915 and served in the 1916 session.<ref name=":0" /> He resigned from the position in February 1917, when he was appointed as the Assistant Attorney General of Mississippi.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":1" /> In 1919, he was elected [Attorney General of Mississippi](/source/Mississippi_Attorney_General), defeating Earl N.
