Dunphy was born in [Portrane](/source/Portrane). His father was a nurse and his mother was a [republican](/source/Irish_republicanism) activist and member of [Cumann na mBan](/source/Cumann_na_mBan).{{citation needed|date=October 2013}} He was married to Lorna.

==Career==
