# Fort Bowman

**Fort Bowman**, also known as Harmony Hall, is a historic home and national [historic district](/source/Historic_district_(United_States)) located near [Middletown](/source/Middletown,_Virginia), [Frederick County, Virginia](/source/Frederick_County,_Virginia). It was built in 1753, by [Pennsylvania German](/source/Pennsylvania_German) settler [George Bowman](/source/George_Bowman_(pioneer)) (1699–1768), father of [Colonel John Bowman](/source/John_Bowman_(pioneer)) (1738-1784), Colonel [Abraham Bowman](/source/Abraham_Bowman) (1749-1837), [Major Joseph Bowman](/source/Joseph_Bowman) (c. 1752–1779), and [Captain Isaac Bowman](/source/Isaac_Bowman) (1757-1826). Abraham Bowman was the colonel of the 8th Virginia Regiment in the Revolutionary War.[3] It is a two-story, rectangular [limestone](/source/Limestone) building with a gable roof. The interior retains its original woodwork. It has a later kitchen wing and iron and wood [portico](/source/Portico). Also on the property are a contributing dairy / [smokehouse](/source/Smokehouse) and the Bowman graveyard, which includes the grave of Isaac Bowman.[4]

It was listed on the [National Register of Historic Places](/source/National_Register_of_Historic_Places) in 1969.[2]
