# Foregrow

***Foregrow*** is the seventh [EP](/source/Extended_play) release by American musician [John Frusciante](/source/John_Frusciante) (including the free *[4-Track Guitar Music](/source/4-Track_Guitar_Music)* release on [Bandcamp](/source/Bandcamp) in November 2015). It was released for [Record Store Day](/source/Record_Store_Day) on April 16, 2016 by Acid Test (Absurd Recordings).[1]

The EP is a [compilation](/source/Compilation_album) put together by Acid Test records gathering four of John's recordings during his initial songwriting period with his more experimental, electronic music which directly followed his work for the [Trickfinger](/source/Trickfinger) record. These tracks were also conceived around the same time of his recordings with [Speed Dealer Moms](/source/Speed_Dealer_Moms_EP), and even feature a modular synthesizer developed for John by his bandmate Chris McDonald. His free download album *[Renoise Tracks 2009–2011](/source/Renoise_Tracks_2009%E2%80%932011)* available on his [SoundCloud](/source/SoundCloud)/[Bandcamp](/source/Bandcamp) pages was recorded during this time period as well.

## Background

The title track was recorded for [RZA](/source/RZA)'s film *[The Man with the Iron Fists](/source/The_Man_with_the_Iron_Fists)* and was included in the film, though did not appear on the soundtrack.

Describing the time surrounding the recordings, John writes, "Some of the programming and production techniques were inspired by people like [Venetian Snares](/source/Venetian_Snares), [AFX](/source/Aphex_Twin), [Squarepusher](/source/Squarepusher), [Gescom](/source/Gescom), DMX Crew, The Railway Raver, [Ceephax Acid Crew](/source/Ceephax_Acid_Crew), [Luke Vibert](/source/Luke_Vibert), and [Autechre](/source/Autechre). [Martin Hannett](/source/Martin_Hannett)'s production of [Joy Division](/source/Joy_Division), and things like [Depeche Mode](/source/Depeche_Mode), [Heaven 17s](/source/Heaven_17) first record, [New Order](/source/New_Order_(band)), and early [Human League](/source/Human_League), were also influential on this stuff. But musically, it is my approach to synthesis, my sense of melody, and my sense of rhythm, which give this music its style, whatever one wishes to call it." Frusciante also mentions [Yes](/source/Yes_(band)) and [Genesis](/source/Genesis_(band)) as influence regarding having longer songs with entirely different sections pieced together.[2]
