# Fording River

The **Fording River** is a [tributary](/source/Tributary) of the [Elk River](/source/Elk_River_(British_Columbia)) in the [Canadian province](/source/Provinces_and_territories_of_Canada) of [British Columbia](/source/British_Columbia). It is part of the [Columbia River](/source/Columbia_River) basin, as the Elk River is a tributary of the [Kootenay River](/source/Kootenay_River), which is a tributary of the Columbia River.

## Course

The Fording River originates in the [Canadian Rockies](/source/Canadian_Rockies) near [Fording River Pass](/source/Fording_River_Pass) on the [Continental Divide](/source/Continental_Divide_of_the_Americas). It flows south, collecting numerous tributaries before joining the Elk River some distance north of [Sparwood](/source/Sparwood,_British_Columbia).
