'''Robert Ford Garrison''' (August 29, 1915 – June 6, 2001), nicknamed "'''Rocky'''" and "'''Snapper'''", was an American professional [baseball](/source/baseball) player and [coach](/source/coach_(baseball)). An [outfielder](/source/outfielder), the native of [Greenville, South Carolina](/source/Greenville%2C_South_Carolina), threw and batted right-handed, stood {{convert|5|ft|10|in}} tall and weighed {{convert|180|lb}}. He appeared in 185 [games](/source/games_played) in [Major League Baseball](/source/Major_League_Baseball) for the [Boston Red Sox](/source/Boston_Red_Sox) (1943–44) and [Philadelphia Athletics](/source/Philadelphia_Athletics) (1944–46).

== Career ==
Garrison played 1,822 games during a long [minor league career](/source/minor_league_baseball) (1938–43; 1946–52; 1954–56). The bulk of his Major League playing career took place during World War II — although he missed part of the 1945 season while serving in the [United States Navy](/source/United_States_Navy).<ref>[http://baseballinwartime.com/those_who_served/those_who_served_atoz.htm BaseballinWartime.com]</ref>  His best season was {{baseball year|1944}}, when he was a regular outfielder for the Athletics after the Red Sox traded him on May 7.  In 134 games that year he [hit](/source/batting_average_(baseball)) .267 ([133](/source/hit_(baseball))-for-[498](/source/at_bat)) with four [home runs](/source/home_runs), 39 [runs batted in](/source/runs_batted_in), and 63 [runs scored](/source/run_(baseball)).  He tied for tenth in the [American League](/source/American_League) with ten [stolen bases](/source/stolen_bases) and tied for fifth with 19 [sacrifice hits](/source/sacrifice_hits).

He played in just six games for the A's in 1945 and in just nine in 1946. In a total of 185 career MLB games, Garrison was 180-for-687 (.262), and 37 [walks](/source/bases_on_balls) and two [hit by pitch](/source/hit_by_pitch)es pushed his [on-base percentage](/source/on-base_percentage) up to .302.  He had six home runs, 56 RBI, and scored 80 [runs](/source/run_(baseball)).  He was an above-average defensive outfielder for his era, handling 425 out of 431 [chances](/source/total_chances) successfully for a .986 [fielding percentage](/source/fielding_percentage).

His minor league career also was interrupted by one season ({{baseball year|1953}}) as a Major League coach on the staff of [Cincinnati Redlegs](/source/Cincinnati_Redlegs) [manager](/source/manager_(baseball)) [Rogers Hornsby](/source/Rogers_Hornsby).
