# Foot per second

The **foot per second** (plural **feet per second**) is a [unit](/source/Physical_unit) of both [speed](/source/Speed) (scalar) and [velocity](/source/Velocity) (vector quantity, which includes direction).[1] It expresses the [distance](/source/Distance) in [feet](/source/Foot_(unit)) (**ft**) traveled or displaced, divided by the [time](/source/Time) in [seconds](/source/Second) (**s**).[2]

The corresponding unit in the [International System of Units](/source/International_System_of_Units) (SI) is the [meter per second](/source/Metre_per_second).

Abbreviations include **ft/s**, **fps**, and the scientific notation **ft s−1**.[1]
