'''Foolow''' ([Old English](/source/Old_English) possibly for "bird hill" or "colourful hill"<ref>{{cite web|url=http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/place/Derbyshire/Foolow|title=Foolow|work=Key to English Place-names|publisher=[English Place Name Society](/source/English_Place_Name_Society) at [The University of Nottingham](/source/The_University_of_Nottingham)|accessdate = 18 August 2013}}</ref>) is a village in the [Derbyshire](/source/Derbyshire) [Peak District](/source/Peak_District).
==Village centre==
The [village green](/source/village_green) contains an ornate Grade II listed<ref name="NHLE">{{NHLE |num=1109996 |desc=Village Cross |grade=II |fewer-links= |access-date=30 January 2022}}</ref> medieval [cross](/source/cross), similar to the one at [Wheston](/source/Wheston) but possibly of later date. It has been suggested that it is 15th century.<ref name="NHLE" /><ref>{{cite web|url=https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101109996-village-cross-foolow|title=Village Cross, Foolow, Derbyshire|website=Britishlistedbuildings.co.uk|accessdate=11 January 2019}}</ref> It is inscribed with the date 1868, when it was moved from the site of the Wesleyan Reform Chapel and its shaft was replaced. A former [bull ring](/source/Bullring) lies in front of the cross.<ref>{{cite book |first=Neville T. |last=Sharpe |title=Crosses of the Peak District |publisher=Landmark Collectors Library |date=2002}}</ref>

==Lead mining==
South of the village, the Watergrove Mine was active from the 18th century until 1853. Water was a problem over this period; both [soughs](/source/soughs) and [pumping engine](/source/pumping_engine)s were used. In 1837 a Fairbrother [beam engine](/source/beam_engine) was installed. Its 80 ft (24 m) chimney stood until 1960. There are hillocks in the north of the parish that mark the sites of other mines.<ref>{{cite book |first=Helen |last=Harris |title=Industrial archeology of the Peak District |publisher=David & Charles |date=1971}}</ref> There are also [sinkholes](/source/sinkholes) present- the most recent appeared in late 2013- believed to result from mine workings.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-derbyshire-25554549|title=Sinkhole opens in ground by village|date=30 December 2013|publisher=BBC}}</ref> It is probable that mining, whether for lead or other minerals, has been an occupation for the people of Foolow since at least the 15th century. Robert Roworth, of Folowe, a miner, appears as owing £4 to Thomas Calton of Chesterfield, in a legal record of 1470.<ref>{{cite web|title=Plea Rolls of the Court of Common Pleas; National Archives; CP 40 / 837|url=http://aalt.law.uh.edu/AALT2/E4/CP40no837/aCP40no837fronts/IMG_0142.htm|quotation=6th entry|website=Aalt.law.uh.edu|accessdate=11 January 2019}}</ref>
