The **Fly Synthesis Catalina NG** is an Italian [ultralight](/source/Ultralight_aircraft) and [light-sport](/source/Light-sport_aircraft) amphibious [flying boat](/source/Flying_boat), designed and produced by [Fly Synthesis](/source/Fly_Synthesis), introduced at the Aero show held in [Friedrichshafen](/source/Friedrichshafen) in 2010. The aircraft is supplied as a complete ready-to-fly-aircraft.[1][2]

## Design and development

The manufacturer says the design borrowed from the development of the earlier [Fly Synthesis Storch](/source/Fly_Synthesis_Storch), stating, "The Catalina NG project evolved from the Storch amphibious aircraft experience".[3]

The Catalina was designed to comply with the [Fédération Aéronautique Internationale](/source/F%C3%A9d%C3%A9ration_A%C3%A9ronautique_Internationale) microlight rules and US light-sport aircraft rules. It features a [strut-braced](/source/Strut-braced) [high-wing](/source/High-wing), a two-seats-in-[side-by-side configuration](/source/Side-by-side_configuration) open cockpit, electrically retractable [tricycle landing gear](/source/Tricycle_landing_gear) and a single engine in [tractor configuration](/source/Tractor_configuration).[1][2]

The aircraft is made from composite material, predominantly [carbon fibre](/source/Carbon_fibre) and [fibreglass](/source/Fibreglass). Its 9.47 m (31.1 ft) span wing has an area of 12.6 m2 (136 sq ft) and electrically-operated [flaperons](/source/Flaperons). The standard engine available is the 64 hp (48 kW) [Rotax 582](/source/Rotax_582) [two-stroke](/source/Two-stroke) powerplant. Folding wings and a [ballistic parachute](/source/Ballistic_parachute) are optional equipment.[1][2][3]
