# Fluviphylax

***Fluviphylax*** is a [genus](/source/Genus) of tiny [cyprinodontiform](/source/Cyprinodontiformes) fish native to the [Amazon Basin](/source/Amazon_Basin), [Orinoco Basin](/source/Orinoco_Basin), and [Oyapock](/source/Oyapock) Basin in [South America](/source/South_America).

It is the only member of the family **Fluviphylacidae**. Members of this genus are known as **American lampeyes**.[2][3] Until recently, it was placed within the [Poecilidae](/source/Poeciliidae) (namely within the otherwise-African clade [Procatopodinae](/source/Procatopodinae), which is now also treated as its own family), but more recent studies have found it to be the [sister group](/source/Sister_group) to the clade consisting of Poecilidae and [Anablepidae](/source/Anablepidae).[4]
