# Flora Samuel

**Flora Samuel** is a [British](/source/British_people) [architect](/source/Architect), author and academic. In 2009 she became the Head of the School of Architecture at [Sheffield University](/source/Sheffield_University), the first woman to hold the post.[1] Prior to this, she worked for ten years at the [Welsh School of Architecture](/source/Welsh_School_of_Architecture), [Cardiff](/source/Cardiff).[1] She was educated at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge)[1] where she is presently Professor of Architecture (1970) and director of the forthcoming [Cambridge Urban Room.](https://www.arct.cam.ac.uk/research/research-groups/cambridge-room)[2]

Samuel previously held the post of Professor of Architecture in the Built Environment at the [University of Reading](/source/University_of_Reading), where she helped set up a new industry-led architecture school in close collaboration with construction.[3] She was appointed as the first [RIBA](/source/Royal_Institute_of_British_Architects) Vice President for Research in 2018.
