The **Fleurieu Peninsula** (locally [/ˈflɜːrioʊ/](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:IPA/English) [*FLUR-ee-oh*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Pronunciation_respelling_key))[1] is a [peninsula](/source/Peninsula) in the Australian state of [South Australia](/source/South_Australia) located south of the state capital of [Adelaide](/source/Adelaide_city_centre).

## History

Before [British colonisation of South Australia](/source/British_colonisation_of_South_Australia), the western side of the peninsula was occupied by the [Kaurna people](/source/Kaurna_people), while several clans of the [Ngarrindjeri](/source/Ngarrindjeri) lived on the eastern side.[2] The people were sustained by the [flora and fauna](/source/Flora_and_fauna) of the peninsula, for [food](/source/Bush_tucker) and [bush medicine](/source/Bush_medicine). The [bulrushes](/source/Bulrush), [reeds](/source/Reed_(plant)) and [sedges](/source/Sedge) were used for [basket-weaving](/source/Basket-weaving) or making [rope](/source/Rope), trees provided wood for [spears](/source/Spear), and [stones were fashioned into tools](/source/Stone_tool).[3]

The Fleurieu Peninsula was named after [Charles Pierre Claret de Fleurieu](/source/Charles_Pierre_Claret_de_Fleurieu), the French explorer and [hydrographer](/source/Hydrographer), by the French explorer [Nicolas Baudin](/source/Nicolas_Baudin) as he explored the south coast of Australia in 1802. The name came into official use in 1911 after Fleurieu's great-nephew, Count Alphonse de Fleurieu, visited Adelaide and met with the Council of the [Royal Geographical Society of South Australia](/source/Royal_Geographical_Society_of_Australasia), which recommended to the [state government](/source/Government_of_South_Australia) that the unnamed peninsula terminating in Cape Jervis be given the name Fleurieu Peninsula "in honour of one who is worthy to be remembered in the annals of Australian geography". The government approved the name later that year.[4][5]

## Extent

A satellite map of Fleurieu Peninsula

The Geographical Names Advisory Committee advised in 2001 that the extent of the peninsula is:[6][*[failed verification](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Verifiability)*]

that portion of land between Gulf St. Vincent and the Southern Ocean *(sic)*, a line from Aldinga *(sic)* (southern end of [Aldinga Bay](/source/Aldinga_Bay)) to [Middleton](/source/Middleton%2C_South_Australia) (eastern end) being the cut-off for the peninsula. This boundary has not to be gazetted at present, and is intended to be the extent of the geographic feature only and is not to be applied to any industry or interest group regional identification.

The coast of the peninsula extends about 140 kilometres (87 mi) from [Sellicks Beach](/source/Sellicks_Beach) in the north to [Middleton](/source/Middleton%2C_South_Australia) in the south-east.[7]

## Features

Towns on the peninsula include [Victor Harbor](/source/Victor_Harbor%2C_South_Australia), [Normanville](/source/Normanville%2C_South_Australia), [Yankalilla](/source/Yankalilla%2C_South_Australia) and [Rapid Bay](/source/Rapid_Bay%2C_South_Australia). Districts include [Inman Valley](/source/Inman_Valley%2C_South_Australia) and Hindmarsh Valley. A ferry travels between [Cape Jervis](/source/Cape_Jervis_(headland)), at the tip of the peninsula, and [Kangaroo Island](/source/Kangaroo_Island).[8] There is surfing on both the west and south facing coasts – known locally to Adelaide surfers as the Mid South Coast and the Far South Coast.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*] Surf spots of note include [Waitpinga](/source/Waitpinga%2C_South_Australia) and Middleton on the Far South Coast.[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

## Flora and fauna

In the past, there were extensive [swamps](/source/Swamp) and [woodlands](/source/Woodland), which provided habitat and food sources for a range of birds, fish, and other animals, included [snake-necked turtles](/source/Snake-necked_turtle), [yabbies](/source/Cherax), [rakali](/source/Rakali), ducks and [black swans](/source/Black_swan). Flora included the native [orchid](/source/Orchidaceae) ([leek orchid](/source/Leek_orchid)), [guinea flower](/source/Guinea_flower) and [swamp wattle](/source/Swamp_wattle) (Wirilda).[3]

## Ecology and conservation

The swamps of the Fleurieu Peninsula were listed as [critically endangered](/source/Critically_endangered) under the [EPBC Act](/source/EPBC_Act) in 2003; however, there is no adopted or made recovery plan for this ecological community, only "Approved Conservation Advice" (2013).[9] Less than four percent of the original swampland remain today.

A group that includes [Aboriginal elders](/source/Aboriginal_elder) and scientists are as of 2021[\[update\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fleurieu_Peninsula&action=edit) documenting [Aboriginal](/source/Aboriginal_Australian) cultural knowledge for the Fleurieu Peninsula [swamps](/source/Swamp) at [Yundi](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Yundi,_South_Australia&action=edit&redlink=1), which is about 40 kilometres (25 mi) south of Adelaide. The Yundi Nature Conservancy, containing about 5 hectares (12 acres) of swamp, is south-east of [McLaren Vale](/source/McLaren_Vale), near [Mount Compass](/source/Mount_Compass%2C_South_Australia). There, Ngarrindjeri elders and scientists from various disciplines share their knowledge and plan for [rewilding](/source/Rewilding_(conservation_biology)) some more of the peninsula. A [seed bank](/source/Seed_bank) has been created to this end.[3]
