*Workers' Five-Year Plan* by [Max Piroch](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Max_Piroch&action=edit&redlink=1) [[de](https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Piroch)], created in [Dresden](/source/Dresden), [East Germany](/source/East_Germany) in 1951

A **five-year plan** (**FYP**) is a type of [economic development initiative](/source/Economic_planning)[1] originating in the [Soviet Union](/source/Soviet_Union) in 1928 and later adopted by many other countries.[2] In each five year plan, the plans for all [sectors of the economy](/source/Sectors_of_the_economy) are synchronized for a period of five years.[3] As [centralized](/source/Planned_economy#Central_planning) and integrated national programs, five-year plans have been adopted by most [communist states](/source/Communist_states) and also many [capitalist states](/source/Capitalist_states).[4] The effectiveness of five-year plans are measured against several [performance indicators](/source/Performance_indicators), such as [real national income](/source/Real_income) and [per capita income](/source/Per_capita_income), with set economic targets expected to be fulfilled during and at the end of such plans.[5]
