***First on the Rope*** (French: ***Premier de cordée***) is a 1944 French [drama film](/source/Drama_film) directed by [Louis Daquin](/source/Louis_Daquin) and starring [Irène Corday](/source/Ir%C3%A8ne_Corday), [André Le Gall](/source/Andr%C3%A9_Le_Gall) and [Lucien Blondeau](/source/Lucien_Blondeau).[1][2] It is an adaptation of the 1941 novel of the same title by [Roger Frison-Roche](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Roger_Frison-Roche&action=edit&redlink=1). It was a faithful adaptation of the novel, which began shooting in June 1943 during the [German Occupation of France](/source/German_military_administration_in_occupied_France_during_World_War_II). Despite being directed by Daquin, a [French Communist](/source/French_Communist_Party), it was considered to demonstrate a [Pétainist](/source/P%C3%A9tainism) ideology possibly even containing elements of [Nazism](/source/Nazism).[3]

The film's sets were designed by the [art director](/source/Art_director) [Lucien Aguettand](/source/Lucien_Aguettand). [Location shooting](/source/Location_shooting) took place around [Mont Blanc](/source/Mont_Blanc_massif) in the [French Alps](/source/French_Alps).

## Synopsis

The son of a veteran [mountain climber](/source/Mountain_climber) succeeds his father as "the first on the rope", leading expeditions into the mountains. However, after nearly losing his life during a climb he develops [vertigo](/source/Vertigo) and abandons his position to take over as a [hotel manager](/source/Hotel_manager). Two years later when his father is persuaded by a [Norwegian](/source/Norwegians) [tourist](/source/Tourist) to take him on a trip into the mountains, his son is forced to come to their rescue when they run into a trouble during a storm.
