During [Operation München](/source/Operation_M%C3%BCnchen), when [Romania](/source/Kingdom_of_Romania) entered [World War II](/source/World_War_II) on the side of the [Axis](/source/Axis_powers) in June–July 1941, the First Army was in the interior of Romania while the [Third](/source/Third_Army_(Romania)) and [Fourth](/source/Fourth_Army_(Romania)) Armies formed the main Romanian assault force. The First Army comprised at the time the 1st Army Corps ([2nd](/source/2nd_Infantry_Division_(Romania)), [11th](/source/11th_Infantry_Division_(Romania)), 30th, 31st IDs), 6th Army Corps, and 7th Army Corps. In August 1944, the [Red Army](/source/Red_Army) entered Romania after driving back [Army Group South](/source/Army_Group_South) from the region. On August 23, [Marshal](/source/Mare%C8%99al_(Romania)) [Ion Antonescu](/source/Ion_Antonescu) was dismissed by [King](/source/King_of_Romania) [Michael I](/source/Michael_I_of_Romania), and Romania declared war on [Germany](/source/Nazi_Germany) and [Hungary](/source/Kingdom_of_Hungary) some days later. The [Soviets](/source/Soviet_Union) took control of the oilfields in the [Ploiești](/source/Ploie%C8%99ti) area, and the [Romanian Army](/source/Romanian_Land_Forces) was used to fight German forces on the [Eastern Front](/source/Eastern_Front_(World_War_II)).
The First Army became one of the Romanian armies fighting for the [Red Army](/source/Red_Army) on the Eastern Front. In its campaign from August 1944 to May 1945, the Romanian Army lost some 64,000 men killed.{{Citation needed|date=December 2009}} At the [Battle of Debrecen](/source/Battle_of_Debrecen) in October 1944, where Romanian units played a key part in the overall Soviet offensive, the First Army consisted of the [4th Army Corps](/source/4th_Territorial_Army_Corps_(Romania)) with the [2nd Infantry Division](/source/2nd_Infantry_Division_(Romania)) and the [4th Infantry Division](/source/4th_Infantry_Division_(Romania)), and the [7th Army Corps](/source/7th_Army_Corps_(Romania)) with the [9th Infantry Division](/source/9th_Mechanized_Brigade_(Romania)) and 19th Infantry Division.[See [Battle of Debrecen order of battle](/source/Battle_of_Debrecen_order_of_battle)] The 7th Army Corps, with the 2nd and 19th Infantry Divisions and what was reported as the 9th Cavalry Division, then took part in the [Siege of Budapest](/source/Siege_of_Budapest) as part of the Red Army's [3rd Ukrainian Front](/source/3rd_Ukrainian_Front).
The last offensive of World War II in which the First Army took part in was the [Prague Offensive](/source/Prague_Offensive) in May 1945. During this offensive, the First Army operated together with the [Romanian Fourth Army](/source/Fourth_Army_(Romania)) as part of the Soviet [2nd Ukrainian Front](/source/2nd_Ukrainian_Front). The offensive started on May 6, a few days before the end of the war. German resistance in the east was now limited to small pockets scattered across [Germany](/source/Germany), [Czechoslovakia](/source/Czechoslovakia), and [Austria](/source/Austria). By May 11 and 12, all remaining German pockets of resistance in the east were crushed.

In 1960, the Military Regions were disbanded and reformed into the 2nd and 3rd Armies.
