Not to be confused with [Fire OS](/source/Fire_OS).

**Fira OS** is a [Linux](/source/Linux)-based [mobile operating system](/source/Mobile_operating_system) and [software platform](/source/Computing_platform) developed by Fira, a subsidiary of Indonesian electronic giant Polytron (member of [Djarum Group](/source/Djarum)). Introduced on January 28, 2016, it was [forked](/source/Fork_(software_development)) from [Android](/source/Android_(operating_system)) and installed on newer Polytron smartphones since 2016.

## Overview

Fira OS is based on the [Android Open Source Project](/source/Android_Open_Source_Project) (AOSP) and the [Linux kernel](/source/Linux_kernel). It was built to comply with an Indonesian regulation requiring 40% minimum local content on all [4G LTE](/source/4G_LTE) smartphones sold in Indonesia starting in 2017.[9][10]

## Applications

Fira OS features applications that are not usually available in other AOSP-based operating systems, such as FIRA Check Pulsa, FIRA Store, FIRA Pay, FIRA Directory, and others.[11]

The preferred license for the Android Open Source Project is the Apache Software License, 2.0. ... Why Apache Software License? ... For userspace (that is, non-kernel) software, we do in fact prefer ASL2.0 (and similar licenses like BSD, MIT, etc.) over other licenses such as LGPL. Android is about freedom and choice. The purpose of Android is promote openness in the mobile world, but we don't believe it's possible to predict or dictate all the uses to which people will want to put our software. So, while we encourage everyone to make devices that are open and modifiable, we don't believe it is our place to force them to do so. Using LGPL libraries would often force them to do so.
