**Finlay Smith** (born 11 May 2002) is an English professional [rugby union](/source/Rugby_union) player who plays as a [fly-half](/source/Fly-half_(rugby_union)) for [Premiership Rugby](/source/Premiership_Rugby) club [Northampton Saints](/source/Northampton_Saints) and the [England national team](/source/England_national_rugby_union_team).[1][2]

## Club career

Smith started playing rugby at local club [Shipston-on-Stour](/source/Shipston-on-Stour_Rugby_Football_Club) and [Warwick School](/source/Warwick_School) prior to joining the [Worcester Warriors](/source/Worcester_Warriors) academy.[3] At 18 years and 292 days, Smith became the second 18-year-old to play for Warriors in the top flight when he made his debut as a replacement against [Gloucester Rugby](/source/Gloucester_Rugby) at [Kingsholm](/source/Kingsholm_Stadium) on 27 February 2021.[3]

During 2021, Smith spent a period of time on loan at [Ampthill](/source/Ampthill_RUFC) in the [RFU Championship](/source/RFU_Championship).

Smith started for the Warriors side that beat [London Irish](/source/London_Irish) in the final of the [2022 Premiership Rugby Cup](/source/2021%E2%80%9322_Premiership_Rugby_Cup) to win Worcester their first ever top-flight trophy.[4]

On 5 October 2022, all Worcester Warriors players' contracts were terminated due to liquidation of the company to which they were contracted. Smith joined [Northampton Saints](/source/Northampton_Saints) with immediate effect shortly after.[5]

In May 2024, following an impressive season he was named in the Premiership Rugby Team of the Season for the [2023–24 campaign](/source/2023%E2%80%9324_Premiership_Rugby).[6] He also won the [RPA](/source/Rugby_Players'_Association) Players' Player of the Year 2023-24, as voted for by his fellow players across the league.[7]

In January 2025, he scored the winning penalty after the clock had gone red to beat league leaders [Bath](/source/Bath_Rugby) 35–34 in the [Premiership](/source/Premiership_Rugby) and win man of the match.[8]

## International career

### England

Smith was selected for the [England under-20 team](/source/England_national_under-20_rugby_union_team) to compete in the [2021 Six Nations Under 20s Championship](/source/2021_Six_Nations_Under_20s_Championship) and contributed significantly, starting in four out of five games and scoring a try against [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_under-20_rugby_union_team).[9] England won the tournament and achieved a grand slam.[10][11] In July 2022 Smith represented the England U20 team during a summer series of games in [Italy](/source/Italy).[12]

Smith's father is Scottish and he is the grandson of former Scotland and [Lions](/source/British_%26_Irish_Lions) prop [Tom Elliot](/source/Tom_Elliot) making him also eligible to represent [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_rugby_union_team).[13][14][15]

In January 2024 he was called up by [Steve Borthwick](/source/Steve_Borthwick) to the senior [England](/source/England_national_rugby_union_team) squad for the [2024 Six Nations Championship](/source/2024_Six_Nations_Championship) and made his debut coming off the bench in a win against [Italy](/source/Italy_national_rugby_union_team).[16] In October 2024, he was among the 17 original players to awarded an [RFU](/source/Rugby_Football_Union) Enhanced Elite Player Squad (EPS) contract by Head Coach [Steve Borthwick](/source/Steve_Borthwick).[17]

In February 2025, he was given his first [test](/source/Test_match_(rugby_union)) start in the second round of the [2025 Six Nations](/source/2025_Six_Nations_Championship) against [France](/source/France_national_rugby_union_team).[18] He was awarded man of the match, kicking the winning conversion as England won 26–25.[19] In the third round, Smith scored the winning penalty from 50m in a 16–15 victory over Scotland to win the [Calcutta Cup](/source/Calcutta_Cup).[20]

### British & Irish Lions

In May 2025, he was selected for the [2025 British & Irish Lions tour to Australia](/source/2025_British_%26_Irish_Lions_tour_to_Australia)[21] and in taking the field against Argentina on 20 June 2025, became the first player to be selected for the Lions who is the grandson of a former Lion.[22]
