**Filz** is an *[Ortsgemeinde](/source/Ortsgemeinde_(Germany))* – a [municipality](/source/Municipalities_of_Germany) belonging to a *[Verbandsgemeinde](/source/Verbandsgemeinde)*, a kind of collective municipality – in the [Cochem-Zell](/source/Cochem-Zell) [district](/source/Districts_of_Germany) in [Rhineland-Palatinate](/source/Rhineland-Palatinate), [Germany](/source/Germany). It belongs to the [*Verbandsgemeinde* of Ulmen](/source/Ulmen_(Verbandsgemeinde)), whose seat is in the [like-named town](/source/Ulmen).

## Geography

The municipality lies in the South [Eifel](/source/Eifel), south of [Ulmen](/source/Ulmen) and east of [Daun](/source/Daun,_Germany).

## History

The municipality's overlord in the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages) was the [Electorate of Trier](/source/Electorate_of_Trier). Beginning in 1794, Filz lay under [French](/source/France) rule. In 1815 it was assigned to the Kingdom of [Prussia](/source/Prussia) at the [Congress of Vienna](/source/Congress_of_Vienna), becoming part of that kingdom's [Rhine Province](/source/Rhine_Province). Since 1946, it has been part of the then newly founded [state](/source/States_of_Germany) of [Rhineland-Palatinate](/source/Rhineland-Palatinate).

### Municipal council

The council is made up of 6 council members, who were elected by [majority vote](/source/Plurality_voting_system) at the municipal election held on 7 June 2009, and the honorary mayor as chairman.[2]

Filz's mayor is Helmut Römer.[1]

### Coat of arms

The municipality's [arms](/source/Coat_of_arms) might be described thus: Tierced in mantle, dexter azure a sword bendwise sinister, the pommel to chief, argent, sinister gules a bishop's staff bendwise and to dexter a wheel spoked of seven Or, and in base Or an ear of wheat leafed of two vert.
