Music genre

**Filmi qawwali** ([Urdu](/source/Urdu_language): فلمی قوٌالی. [Bengali](/source/Bengali_language): ফিল্মি কাওয়ালি, [Hindi](/source/Hindi_language): फ़िल्मी क़व्वाली) is a form of [qawwali](/source/Qawwali) music found in the [Lollywood](/source/Lollywood), [Dhallywood](/source/Cinema_of_Bangladesh), [Tollywood](/source/Cinema_of_West_Bengal), and [Bollywood](/source/Bollywood) film industries.[1]

It represents a distinct subgenre of [film music](/source/Filmi), although it usually bears little resemblance to traditional qawwali, which is the devotional music of the [Sufis](/source/Sufi). One example of filmi qawwali is the song [Pardah Hai Pardah](/source/Parda_Hai_Parda_(song)) sung by [Mohammed Rafi](/source/Mohammed_Rafi), and composed by [Laxmikant–Pyarelal](/source/Laxmikant%E2%80%93Pyarelal) in Indian film [Amar Akbar Anthony](/source/Amar_Akbar_Anthony) (1977).[2] Another example of filmi qawwali is the song "Qurbani Qurbani Qurbani" rendered by [Kishore Kumar](/source/Kishore_Kumar), [Anwar](/source/Anwar_(singer)) and Aziz Nazan and composed by [Kalyanji-Anandji](/source/Kalyanji-Anandji) for the Indian film [Qurbani](/source/Qurbani_(1980_film))(1980).[3]

Within the subgenre of filmi qawwali, there exists a form of qawwali that is infused with modern and [Western](/source/Western_culture) instruments, usually with [techno](/source/Techno) beats, called *techno-qawwali*. An example of techno-qawwali is [Kajra Re](/source/Kajra_Re), a filmi song composed by [Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy](/source/Shankar%E2%80%93Ehsaan%E2%80%93Loy). A newer variation of the techno-qawwali based on the more dance oriented tracks is known as the "club qawwali". More tracks of this nature are being recorded and released.

[Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan](/source/Nusrat_Fateh_Ali_Khan) and [A.R. Rahman](/source/A.R._Rahman) have composed filmi qawwalis in the style of traditional qawwali. Examples include Arziyan (*[Delhi 6](/source/Delhi_6)*), Khwaja Mere Khwaja (*[Jodhaa Akbar](/source/Jodhaa_Akbar)*)[4] and Kun Faya Kun (*[Rockstar](/source/Rockstar_(2011_film))*).

Examples in the [Bengali](/source/Bengali_language) [Tollywood](/source/Cinema_of_West_Bengal) cinema include the song Remix Qawwali (*[Bindaas](/source/Bindaas_(2014_film))*) sung by [Neha Kakkar](/source/Neha_Kakkar) and [Nakash Aziz](/source/Nakash_Aziz).[5] In addition to this, the [Bengali](/source/Bengali_language) [Dhallywood](/source/Dhallywood) cinema also includes qawwalis such as the song Tikatuli (*[Dhaka Attack](/source/Dhaka_Attack)*) sung by Motin Chowdhury.[6]

### Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

This photo is dedicated to Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. It's made by Bhushan Kuma Atter (Attersaab)

One of [Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan](/source/Nusrat_Fateh_Ali_Khan)'s famous Qawwali songs, "Tere Bin Nahin Lagda"[7] ("I am restless without you"),[8] appeared on two of his 1996 albums, *Sorrows Vol. 69*[9] and *Sangam* (as "Tere Bin Nahin Lagda Dil"), the latter a collaborative album with Indian lyricist [Javed Akhtar](/source/Javed_Akhtar).[10] [Lata Mangeshkar](/source/Lata_Mangeshkar) recorded a [cover version](/source/Cover_version) called "Tere Bin Nahin Jeena" for *[Kachche Dhaage](/source/Kachche_Dhaage)*[7] Composed by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, the *Kachche Dhaage* soundtrack album sold 3 million units in India.[11] [British-Indian](/source/British-Indian) producer [Bally Sagoo](/source/Bally_Sagoo) released a remix of "Tere Bin Nahin Lagda", which was later featured in the 2002 British film *[Bend It Like Beckham](/source/Bend_It_Like_Beckham)*, starring [Parminder Nagra](/source/Parminder_Nagra) and [Keira Knightley](/source/Keira_Knightley).[8] A cover version called "Tere Bin" was recorded by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan with [Asees Kaur](/source/Asees_Kaur) for the 2018 Bollywood film *[Simmba](/source/Simmba)*[12]

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's music had a big impact on [Bollywood music](/source/Bollywood_music), inspiring numerous Indian musicians working in [Bollywood](/source/Bollywood), especially during the 1990s. For example, he inspired [A. R. Rahman](/source/A._R._Rahman) and [Javed Akhtar](/source/Javed_Akhtar), both of whom he collaborated with. However, there were many instances of Indian [music directors](/source/Music_director) plagiarising Khan's music to produce hit [filmi](/source/Filmi) songs.[13] [Viju Shah](/source/Viju_Shah)'s hit song "Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast" in *[Mohra](/source/Mohra)* (1994) was plagiarised from Khan's popular Qawwali song "[Dam Mast Qalandar](/source/Dam_Mast_Qalandar)".[13]
