{{Short description|Early Gothic king}}
{{Expand German|Filimer|date=August 2015}}
'''Filimer''' was an early [Gothic](/source/Goths) king, according to [Jordanes](/source/Jordanes). He was the son of [Gadaric](/source/Gautrekr) and the fifth generation since [Berig](/source/Berig) settled with his people in [Gothiscandza](/source/Gothiscandza). When the Gothic nation had multiplied Filimer decided to move his people to [Scythia](/source/Scythia) where they defeated the [Sarmatians](/source/Sarmatians). They then named their new territory ''[Oium](/source/Oium)'', meaning "in the waterlands". This migration would have allegedly taken place about 2030 years before Jordanes wrote his "''Origin of the Goths''".<ref>{{citation|author=[Jordanes](/source/Jordanes)|url=https://www.ucalgary.ca/~vandersp/Courses/texts/jordgeti.html#LX |title=Getica 313 |editor-last=[Charles Christopher Mierow](/source/Charles_Christopher_Mierow)}}</ref>

The archaeological record shows that the population of the Gothic [Wielbark culture](/source/Wielbark_culture) (Poland) had indeed moved and settled in [Ukraine](/source/Ukraine) and mixed with the previous populations of the [Zarubintsy culture](/source/Zarubintsy_culture), where they formed the [Chernyakhiv culture](/source/Chernyakhiv_culture). This cultural movement is identified as the migration of the [Goths](/source/Goths) from [Gothiscandza](/source/Gothiscandza) to [Oium](/source/Oium), but not all scholars find the evidence compelling.<ref>{{citation |author=Michael Kulikowski |title=Rome's Gothic Wars |pages=63, 64 |isbn=0521846331 |year=2007}}</ref>

Jordanes (XXIV:121) also relates that Filimer expelled the [witch](/source/witch)es, who were called [''haliurunnas''](/source/Haliurunas). These witches were condemned to seek refuge far away and were said to have given birth to the first [Huns](/source/Huns).

The Danish scholar [Arne Søby Christensen](/source/Arne_S%C3%B8by_Christensen) has suggested that the name Filimer was made up by [Cassiodorus](/source/Cassiodorus),<ref>{{citation|author=Arne Søby Christensen|title=Cassiodorus, Jordanes, and the History of the Goths. Studies in a Migration Myth|pages=http://www.mtp.hum.ku.dk/details.asp?eln=200114|year=2002|isbn=978-87-7289-710-3}}</ref> a suggestion that was favourably received among historians.<ref>{{citation |author=Alexander Callander Murray |title=Review of "Cassiodorus, Jordanes..."| journal=The International History Review |year=2004 |pages=805 |volume=XXV}}</ref>
