# Filemon Mataka

**Filemon Mataka**[1] was an [Anglican](/source/Anglican) [bishop](/source/Bishop)[2] in [Zambia](/source/Zambia)[3] in the second half of the 20th century:[4] he was the first [African](/source/Africa) bishop in the [Church of the Province of Central Africa](/source/Church_of_the_Province_of_Central_Africa).[5]

Mataka was born in 1909 at [Msoro](/source/Msoro). He was ordained deacon in 1941 and priest in 1943. After service as a priest in the [Diocese of Northern Rhodesia](/source/Bishop_of_Northern_Rhodesia) he was appointed the [Suffragan Bishop](/source/Suffragan_Bishop) of [Zambia](/source/Zambia)[6] in 1964 and the Archdeacon of Eastern Zambia in 1966. He was priest in charge of St Peter, [Lusaka](/source/Lusaka) from 1966 to 1969. In 1970 he was appointed Bishop of Zambia and in 1971 he was appointed the first [Bishop of Lusaka](/source/Diocese_of_Lusaka).[7]
