# Filaret Barbu

**Filaret Barbu** (April 16, 1903 – May 31, 1984) was a Romanian [operetta](/source/Operetta) composer.

## Life

Filaret Barbu was the son of Iosif Hazi Barbu, a pork butcher, and Ema Barbu (*[née](/source/N%C3%A9e)* Dragoș). During his childhood he often heard traditional Romanian [lăutari](/source/L%C4%83utari) and [taraf](/source/Taraf_(musical_band)) bands in his grandfather's inn. He went to school in [Lugoj](/source/Lugoj) and [Caransebeș](/source/Caransebe%C8%99). He studied the [violin](/source/Violin) and the [counterpoint](/source/Counterpoint) at the [New Vienna Conservatory](/source/Neues_Wiener_Konservatorium) during 1922—1926.

Back in Romania, he became a music teacher at "Coriolan Brediceanu" High School in Lugoj and the conductor of "Ion Vidu" choir, which he founded in 1922.[1] In 1931, after the death of [Ion Vidu](/source/Ion_Vidu), he became the leader of the local choir "Reuniunea română de muzică și cântări".[2] His debut work was the 1924 [vaudeville](/source/Vaudeville) *Privighetoarea albă* (*The White [Nightingale](/source/Nightingale)*). He also wrote a monographic study dedicated to tenor [Traian Grozăvescu](/source/Traian_Groz%C4%83vescu) and a collection of choir songs titled *Portativ bănățean* (*The [Banat](/source/Banat) [Staff](/source/Staff_(music))*).

He died in 1984 in [Timișoara](/source/Timi%C8%99oara). He was the father of ballet dancer and choreographer [Gelu Barbu](/source/Gelu_Barbu).
