**Ferrard** ([Irish](/source/Irish_language): *Fir Arda*) is a [barony](/source/Barony_(Ireland)) in [County Louth](/source/County_Louth), [Ireland](/source/Republic_of_Ireland).

## Etymology

Ferrard derives its name from *Fir Arda Ciannachta*, "men of the high [Ciannachta](/source/Ciannachta)", referring to the uplands around [Mount Oriel](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mount_Oriel&action=edit&redlink=1).[1]

## Location

Ferrard is found in south [County Louth](/source/County_Louth), between the White River, [River Boyne](/source/River_Boyne) and [Mattock River](/source/Mattock_River).

Ferrard barony is bordered to the north by [Ardee](/source/Ardee_(barony)); to the west by [Lower Slane](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lower_Slane&action=edit&redlink=1), [Upper Slane](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Upper_Slane&action=edit&redlink=1), County Meath and to the south by [Drogheda](/source/Drogheda_(barony)) and [Lower Duleek](/source/Lower_Duleek), County Meath.

## History

Ferrard derives its name from *Fera Arda*, or *Fatharta*, the ancient home of the Fir Arda [Ciannachta](/source/Ciannachta).[2]
