'''Ferrallitisation''' is the process in which [rock](/source/rock_(geology)) is changed into a [soil](/source/soil) consisting of [clay](/source/clay) ([kaolinite](/source/kaolinite)) and [sesquioxide](/source/sesquioxide)s, in the form of hydrated oxides of iron and [aluminium](/source/aluminium). In humid [tropical](/source/tropical) areas, with consistently high temperatures and rainfall for all or most of the year, [chemical weathering](/source/chemical_weathering) rapidly breaks down the rock. This at first produces clays which later also break down to form [silica](/source/silica). The silica is removed by [leaching](/source/Leaching_(pedology)) and the sesquioxides of iron and aluminium remain, giving the characteristic red colour of many [tropical soil](/source/tropical)s. Ferrallitisation is the reverse of [podsolisation](/source/podsolisation), where silica remains and the iron and aluminum are removed. In tropical [rain forest](/source/rain_forest)s with rain throughout the year, ferrallitic soils develop. In [savanna](/source/savanna) areas, with altering dry and wet climates, [ferruginous](/source/Iron_oxide) soils occur.
