It is the only member of the [monotypic genus](/source/monotypic_genus) '''''Feroxodon'''''.

The fish has sloping, thin, brown and white lines on the head and body curving toward the tail. The lower head, body and [caudal peduncle](/source/caudal_peduncle) are spotted. The maximum size is reported as {{cvt|39|cm}}<ref name=FB/> to {{cvt|90|cm|ft|0}}.<ref name=am/>

The fish occurs throughout the Indo-Western Pacific, including [New Guinea](/source/New_Guinea), and is recorded from [Western Australia](/source/Western_Australia) south to [New South Wales](/source/New_South_Wales).

In spite of its small size, this fish is known to make unprovoked attacks on humans, the inspiration for the common name ferocious pufferfish.<ref name = am/> One such attack near [Thursday Island](/source/Thursday_Island), Queensland, Australia, caused severe damage to the toes of a five-year-old boy.<ref>{{Cite news |last=Michael |first=P |date=2012-04-06 |title=Ferocious pufferfish nearly took Tom's toes while he was wading on Thursday Island |url=http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/national/killer-tadpole-nearly-took-toes/story-e6frg15u-1226320846635 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120509202728/http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/national/killer-tadpole-nearly-took-toes/story-e6frg15u-1226320846635 |archive-date=2012-05-09 |work=Perth Now}}</ref>
