**Fernando Ariel Batista** (born 20 August 1970) is an Argentine [football](/source/Association_football) manager and former player who played as a [defender](/source/Defender_(association_football)).

## Playing career

Born in [Buenos Aires](/source/Buenos_Aires), Batista started his playing career with Argentine top flight side [Argentinos Juniors](/source/Argentinos_Juniors), where he made 134 league appearances and scored four goals.[1] He moved to [San Lorenzo](/source/San_Lorenzo_de_Almagro) in 1993, playing for two seasons at the club.[2]

In 1997, Batista signed for [Godoy Cruz](/source/Godoy_Cruz_Antonio_Tomba) in the Argentine second division.[1] He joined [All Boys](/source/All_Boys) in the following year, playing for three seasons before retiring in 2001, aged 30.

## International career

Batista represented [Argentina](/source/Argentina_national_football_team) at [under-20](/source/Argentina_national_under-20_football_team) level at the [1989 FIFA World Youth Championship](/source/1989_FIFA_World_Youth_Championship).[3]

## Managerial career

### Early career

Batista began his coaching career with the youth sides of San Lorenzo, joining the club in 2004. He returned to Argentinos Juniors in 2008, being a youth coach and coordinator until 2016.[4]

In 2017, Batista was a part of [Claudio Úbeda](/source/Claudio_%C3%9Abeda)'s staff at the [Argentina national under-20 team](/source/Argentina_national_under-20_football_team), being his assistant in the [2017 South American U-20 Championship](/source/2017_South_American_U-20_Championship) and the [2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup](/source/2017_FIFA_U-20_World_Cup).[5][6] In January 2018, he was appointed manager of the [Armenia national under-19 team](/source/Armenia_national_under-19_football_team).[7]

On 20 December 2018, Batista returned to Argentina's under-20 side, being appointed manager in the place of [Lionel Scaloni](/source/Lionel_Scaloni) who had just been promoted to the full side.[8] He finished second in the [2019 South American U-20 Championship](/source/2019_South_American_U-20_Championship),[9] qualifying the nation to the [2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup](/source/2019_FIFA_U-20_World_Cup), where they were knocked out by [Mali](/source/Mali_national_under-20_football_team) in the round of 16.

Batista was also in charge of the [under-23 team](/source/Argentina_national_under-23_football_team) in the [2020 Summer Olympics](/source/Football_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_tournament),[10] with Argentina being knocked out in the group stage. He departed his role as under-20 and under-23 manager on 30 November 2021.[11]

### Venezuela national team

After departing the Argentina youth sides, Batista joined [José Pékerman](/source/Jos%C3%A9_P%C3%A9kerman)'s staff at the [Venezuela national team](/source/Venezuela_national_football_team);[11] an assistant of the full side, he was also named manager of [the under-23 squad](/source/Venezuela_national_under-23_football_team). He led the side to the final of the [2022 Maurice Revello Tournament](/source/2022_Maurice_Revello_Tournament),[12] losing to hosts [France](/source/France_national_under-23_football_team).

On 10 March 2023, Batista was appointed manager of the Venezuela national team, replacing Pékerman.[13] His first match in charge of the side occurred on 15 June, a 1–0 [friendly](/source/Exhibition_match) win over [Honduras](/source/Honduras_national_football_team), and he ended the year with only one loss in eight official matches, notably leaving the side in the fourth position of the [2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers](/source/2026_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(CONMEBOL)).[14]

Batista led the *Vinotinto* to a perfect group stage in the [2024 Copa América](/source/2024_Copa_Am%C3%A9rica), winning all three matches against [Ecuador](/source/Ecuador_national_football_team), [Mexico](/source/Mexico_national_football_team) and [Jamaica](/source/Jamaica_national_football_team).[15] However, his side was knocked out by [Canada](/source/Canada_men's_national_soccer_team) on penalties in the quarterfinals.

After a 6-3 loss to [Colombia](/source/Colombia_national_football_team) during the final matchday of the [World Cup qualifiers](/source/2026_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(CONMEBOL)) that eliminated Venezuela, Batista was fired and replaced by [Oswaldo Vizcarrondo](/source/Oswaldo_Vizcarrondo).[16]

## Personal life

Batista's older brother [Sergio](/source/Sergio_Batista) was also a footballer and a manager.[17] Their father José was an important figure in the history of [Club Parque](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Club_Social_y_Deportivo_Parque&action=edit&redlink=1) [[es](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Club_Social_y_Deportivo_Parque)].[8] His daughter Tatiana got engaged to fellow footballer [Kevin Mac Allister](/source/Kevin_Mac_Allister), the second son of [Carlos Mac Allister](/source/Carlos_Mac_Allister), in 2024,[18] and married on 14 June, 2025.[19]
