== Life and career ==
Born in [Laurierville, Quebec](/source/Laurierville%2C_Quebec), he received a [Bachelor of Arts](/source/Bachelor_of_Arts) degree in 1957 from the Séminaire de Québec. He received his [Doctor of Medicine](/source/Doctor_of_Medicine) in 1962 and a [Ph.D.](/source/Ph.D.) in 1966 from [Université Laval](/source/Universit%C3%A9_Laval). From 1966 to 1969, he took his postdoctoral studies at the [University of Cambridge](/source/University_of_Cambridge) and the [University of Sussex](/source/University_of_Sussex).<ref name="WhoWho">{{cite book|title=Canadian Who's Who 1997: Volume 32|publisher=University of Toronto Press|isbn=0802049966|date=July 1997|editor=Elizabeth Lumley}}</ref>

In 1966, he joined the faculty of Université Laval as an assistant professor. In 1969 he was made an associate professor, and in 1974 he was made a full professor. In 1990, he was made the head of the Department of Physiology.
