# Fernand Brunner

**Fernand Brunner** (8 October 1920 – 1 November 1991) was a [Swiss](/source/Swiss_people) [philosopher](/source/Philosopher). After studying in [Lausanne](/source/Lausanne) and in [Paris](/source/Paris), he was a professor at the [University of Neuchâtel](/source/University_of_Neuch%C3%A2tel).[1][2]

He united philosophical introspection with the study of the [history of philosophy](/source/Philosophy#History) in a personalized manner. He was interested in [ancient history](/source/Ancient_history), the [Middle Ages](/source/Middle_Ages), the [modern era](/source/Modern_era), traditional [Arab](/source/Islamic_philosophy) and [Jewish](/source/Jewish_philosophy) philosophies, as well as ideas from [India](/source/India), studying the differences between philosophy and tradition. Among Western traditions, he was particularly interested in the [platonic](/source/Plato) and [neoplatonic](/source/Neoplatonism) traditions, in [Meister Eckhart](/source/Meister_Eckhart), [Solomon Ibn Gabirol](/source/Solomon_Ibn_Gabirol), and [Leibniz](/source/Gottfried_Wilhelm_Leibniz).

He defended the idea that philosophy was linked to [wisdom](/source/Wisdom), and that the history of philosophy was strictly linked to philosophy itself. In his work about science and reality, he criticized the foundations of [modern science](/source/Modern_science), which he countered with the importance of philosophy.
