== Life ==
Zimmermann was born in [Bad Freienwalde](/source/Bad_Freienwalde) in the [Prussian](/source/Kingdom_of_Prussia) [Province of Brandenburg](/source/Province_of_Brandenburg), studied economics and philosophy at [Berlin](/source/Humboldt_University_of_Berlin), and worked for the newspapers ''[Vossische Zeitung](/source/Vossische_Zeitung)'' and ''[Berliner Morgenpost](/source/Berliner_Morgenpost)'' before joining the magazine ''[Die Tat](/source/Die_Tat)'' in 1931. A supporter of [Nazism](/source/Nazism) he joined the [Schutzstaffel](/source/Schutzstaffel) in 1934 and the [Nazi Party](/source/Nazi_Party) itself in 1936.<ref>Ernst Klee: ''Das Kulturlexikon zum Dritten Reich. After the War, he found work at the ''[Sonntagsblatt](/source/Sonntagsblatt)'' and ''[Die Welt](/source/Die_Welt)'' newspapers.

In 1931 he published the book ''Das Ende des Kapitalismus'' (The End of Capitalism), in which he offered the view that [laissez-faire](/source/laissez-faire) [capitalism](/source/capitalism) was dead, and that German [autarky](/source/autarky) was the future.
