Plaut is remembered for his research on the [syphilitic](/source/syphilis) origin of [general paresis](/source/General_paresis_of_the_insane), as well as his work with [August von Wassermann](/source/August_von_Wassermann) (1866-1925) in the development of a [serological](/source/serology) test for syphilis. Plaut performed extensive research of syphilis and its correlation to psychiatric disorders, and conducted early studies in [neuroimmunology](/source/neuroimmunology) involving the [brain](/source/brain)'s immune reaction to syphilitic infiltration.
