# Felipe Reyes

**Felipe Reyes Cabanás** (born 16 March 1980) is a Spanish former professional [basketball](/source/Basketball) player. He represented the senior [Spain national team](/source/Spain_men's_national_basketball_team). Standing at a height of 2.06 m (6 ft 9 in),[1] and weighing 120 kg (260 lb), he plays at the [power forward](/source/Power_forward_(basketball)) and [center](/source/Center_(basketball)) positions.[2]

During his pro club career, Reyes won two [EuroLeague](/source/EuroLeague) championships, in [2015](/source/2015_EuroLeague_Final_Four) and [2018](/source/2018_EuroLeague_Final_Four). He was also an [All-EuroLeague First Team](/source/All-EuroLeague_Team) selection in the [EuroLeague 2014–15 season](/source/2014%E2%80%9315_Euroleague). He was named a [EuroLeague Legend](/source/EuroLeague_Legend) in 2022. With Spain's senior national team, he won the gold medal at the [2006 FIBA World Cup](/source/2006_FIBA_World_Cup), and gold medals at the [2009 EuroBasket](/source/2009_EuroBasket), the [2011 EuroBasket](/source/2011_EuroBasket), and the [2015 EuroBasket](/source/2015_EuroBasket).

## Professional career

### Estudiantes Madrid (1998–2004)

Reyes began his professional [club](/source/Sports_club) career in the [Spanish top-tier](/source/Spanish_basketball_league_system) level [ACB League](/source/ACB_League), with [Estudiantes Madrid](/source/CB_Estudiantes), during the [Spanish League 1998–99 season](/source/1998%E2%80%9399_ACB_season). In that same season, he also played with the club's second level [reserve team](/source/Reserve_team), Estudiantes B, in the Spanish 2nd-tier level [EBA League](/source/Liga_Espa%C3%B1ola_de_Baloncesto). He played with Estudiantes through the [Spanish League 2003–04 season](/source/2003%E2%80%9304_ACB_season). With Estudiantes, he also played in the European-wide secondary level [EuroCup](/source/EuroCup_Basketball), and the European-wide premier level [EuroLeague](/source/EuroLeague).

### Real Madrid (2004–2021)

Reyes moved to the Spanish [EuroLeague](/source/EuroLeague) club [Real Madrid](/source/Real_Madrid_Baloncesto), before the 2004–05 season. In May 2015, he was named to the 2014–15 season's [All-EuroLeague First Team](/source/All-EuroLeague_Team), for his performance during the season;[3] and he was also named the Spanish [ACB League Most Valuable Player](/source/ACB_Most_Valuable_Player_Award) of the 2014–15 ACB season, marking the second time in his career that he won that award.[4]

During that 2014–15 season, Reyes' club, Real Madrid, won the [EuroLeague season](/source/2014%E2%80%9315_Euroleague)'s championship, after defeating [Olympiacos](/source/Olympiacos_B.C.), by a score of 78–59, in [the league's final game](/source/2015_EuroLeague_Final_Four).[5] Real Madrid eventually finished the season, by also winning the [Spanish ACB League season](/source/2014%E2%80%9315_ACB_season) championship, after a 3–0 series sweep in the Spanish League final series against [Barcelona](/source/FC_Barcelona_B%C3%A0squet). With that title, Real Madrid had won the [Triple Crown](/source/European_Basketball_Triple_Crown) for the season.[6]

On 27 June 2015, Reyes signed a two-year contract extension with Real Madrid.[7] He became the Spanish ACB League's [all-time career leader in total rebounds](/source/ACB_statistical_leaders#Liga_ACB_all-time_rebounding_leaders), in March 2017, after surpassing the previous record holder, [Granger Hall](/source/Granger_Hall_(basketball)).[8]

In May 2018, Real Madrid won the [2017–18 EuroLeague](/source/2017%E2%80%9318_EuroLeague) season's championship, after defeating [Fenerbahçe Doğuş](/source/Fenerbah%C3%A7e_Men's_Basketball) in the [final game](/source/2018_EuroLeague_Final_Four), by a score of 85–80.[9] Over 35 EuroLeague games played that season, Reyes averaged 8.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

On 4 February 2019, Reyes became the ACB League's all-time leader in games played, including both formats of the league ([ACB](/source/Liga_ACB) & [Primera División](/source/Liga_Espa%C3%B1ola_de_Baloncesto_(1957%E2%80%931983))). He achieved that after he played in his 779th Spanish League game, against [Unicaja Málaga](/source/Baloncesto_M%C3%A1laga), eclipsing the league's previous record-holder for most games played, [Joan Creus](/source/Joan_Creus)'s tally.[10] On 15 February 2019, Reyes became the all-time leader in games played in the [Spanish King's Cup](/source/Spanish_Basketball_King's_Cup) tournament, as he overtook [Juan Carlos Navarro](/source/Juan_Carlos_Navarro_(basketball)), to achieve that record.[11]

On 24 July 2020 Reyes re-signed with the team.[12]

On 23 June 2021 Reyes announced the end of his professional basketball career in which he was the captain of the team.[13]

## National team career

Reyes was a member of the junior national teams of Spain. With Spain's junior national teams, he won medals at the following tournaments: the gold medal at the [1998 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship](/source/1998_FIBA_Europe_Under-18_Championship), the gold medal at the [1999 FIBA Under-19 World Cup](/source/FIBA_Under-19_World_Cup), and the bronze medal at the [2000 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship](/source/2000_FIBA_Europe_Under-20_Championship).

Reyes was a long-time member of the senior [Spain men's national basketball team](/source/Spain_men's_national_basketball_team). With Spain's senior national team, he won the following medals: the bronze medal at the [2001 EuroBasket](/source/2001_EuroBasket), the silver medal at the [2003 EuroBasket](/source/2003_EuroBasket), the gold medal at the [2006 FIBA World Cup](/source/2006_FIBA_World_Cup), the silver medal at the [2007 EuroBasket](/source/2007_EuroBasket), the silver medal at the [2008 Summer Olympics](/source/Basketball_at_the_2008_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_tournament), the gold medal at the [2009 EuroBasket](/source/2009_EuroBasket), the gold medal at the [2011 EuroBasket](/source/2011_EuroBasket), the silver medal at the [2012 Summer Olympics](/source/Basketball_at_the_2012_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_tournament), the gold medal at the [2015 EuroBasket](/source/2015_EuroBasket), and the bronze medal at the [2016 Summer Olympics](/source/Basketball_at_the_2016_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Men's_tournament). ## Personal life

Reyes' older brother, [Alfonso](/source/Alfonso_Reyes_(basketball)), is also a former professional basketball player. Reyes' nickname is "Espartaco" (English: "[Spartacus](/source/Spartacus)").[15][16][17]
