**Feinsum** ([Dutch](/source/Dutch_language): *Finkum*[3]) is a village in [Leeuwarden](/source/Leeuwarden) municipality in the province of [Friesland](/source/Friesland), the [Netherlands](/source/Netherlands). It had a population of around 165 in January 2017.[4]

There is a restored [windmill](/source/Windmill), the *[Slagdijkstermolen](/source/Slagdijkstermolen%2C_Finkum)*.

## History

The village was first mentioned in 1335 as Finckum. The etymology is unclear.[5] Feinsum is a very old *[terp](/source/Terp)* (artificial living mound) village which probably had its origins in the beginning of [our era](/source/Anno_Domini), and has one of the oldest [dikes](/source/Dyke_(embankment)) of the Netherlands.[6] There used to be outpost of the monastery [Mariëngaarde](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mari%C3%ABngaarde&action=edit&redlink=1) [[nl](https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mari%C3%ABngaarde)] in Feinsum.[7]

The Dutch Reformed church dates from the 13th century and was restored between 1962 and 1964.[6] In 1840, Feinsum was home to 227 people.[7]

Before 2018, the village was part of the [Leeuwarderadeel](/source/Leeuwarderadeel) municipality.[7]
