Fehren is first mentioned in 1371 as ''der Hofe in Ferren''.<ref name=HDS/>

==Geography==
Fehren has an area, {{as of|2009|lc=on}}, of {{convert|1.48|km2|sqmi|sp=us}}.  Of this area, {{convert|0.81|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 54.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while {{convert|0.45|km2|sqmi|abbr=on}} or 30.4% is forested. Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 10.1% and transportation infrastructure made up 4.1%.  Power and water infrastructure as well as other special developed areas made up 1.4% of the area  Out of the forested land, 27.7% of the total land area is heavily forested and 2.7% is covered with orchards or small clusters of trees.  Of the agricultural land, 9.5% is used for growing crops and 40.5% is pastures, while 4.7% is used for orchards or vine crops.  All the water in the municipality is flowing water.<ref name=BFS_land/>

The municipality is located in the Thierstein district, on the eastern slope above the Breitenbach valley.

Most of the population ({{as of|2000|lc=on}}) speaks [German](/source/German_language) (491 or 96.5%), with [French](/source/French_language) being second most common (9 or 1.8%) and [Turkish](/source/Turkish_language) being third (4 or 0.8%).<ref name=STAT2000/>

There were 2 single room apartments and 101 apartments with five or more rooms.
