In [sailing](/source/sailing), an '''extra'''<ref name="king424">{{cite book |last1=King |first1=Dean |title=A Sea of Words |date=2000 |publisher=Henry Holt |isbn=978-0-8050-6615-9 |page=424 |edition=3}}</ref> is a sail that is not part of the working [sail plan](/source/sail_plan).

The most common extra is the [spinnaker](/source/spinnaker). Other extras include [studding sail](/source/studding_sail)s, the modern [spanker](/source/spanker_(sail)) (or tallboy), and some [staysail](/source/staysail)s and [topsail](/source/topsail)s.

In [yacht racing](/source/yacht_racing), there are often separate divisions depending on whether extras are permitted. A race or division in which extras are not permitted is commonly called a ''non-spinnaker'' or ''no flying sails'' race or division.
