== History ==
The village was first mentioned in 1376 as "tot Exle", and means "forest of the [oak](/source/oak) trees".<ref>{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/exloo |title=Exloo - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=11 April 2022 |language=nl}}</ref> Exloo is an ''[esdorp](/source/esdorp)'' which developed in the Middle Ages probably from [Odoorn](/source/Odoorn). It has three ''essen'' (communal pastures), but no church.<ref name="monument">{{cite book|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu07_01/sten009monu07_01_0037.php |title=Exloo |author=Ronald Stenvert |page=61 |year=2001 |location=Zwolle |publisher=Waanders |isbn=90 400 9454 3 |language=nl |access-date=11 April 2022}}</ref> The [peat](/source/peat) in the [raised bog](/source/raised_bog) near Exloo was excavated around 1800. In 1850, it turned into an industry and excavation villages such as [1e Exloërmond](/source/1e_Exlo%C3%ABrmond) and [2e Exloërmond](/source/2e_Exlo%C3%ABrmond) were established.<ref name="plaats"/>

Exloo was home to 570 people in 1840.<ref name="plaats">{{cite web|url=https://www.plaatsengids.nl/exloo |title=Exloo |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=11 April 2022 |language=nl}}</ref>

In 2010, [LOFAR](/source/Low-Frequency_Array_(LOFAR)), a low frequency radio telescope, opened near Exloo. There are 6 stations in Exloo with a 18 stations within a 2 kilometre radius, and a further 28 in eight European countries. The set up will give LOFAR a resolution comparable to the [Hubble Space Telescope](/source/Hubble_Space_Telescope).<ref>{{cite web|url=https://lofar.bg/what-is-lofar/ |title=What is LOFAR |website=Lofar.bg |access-date=11 April 2022 }}</ref>

The ''hunebed'' [dolmen](/source/dolmen) {{ill|D30 (dolmen)|nl|D30 (hunebed)|lt=D30}} used to have four capstones, however one is missing. Unless the others which are placed east-west, it is placed north-south. In 1918, it was explored by [Albert Egges van Giffen](/source/Albert_Egges_van_Giffen). There were five floors underneath, and you could stand up straight in the first part of the grave underneath.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.hunebedden.nl/d30.htm |title=D30 in boswachterij Exloo |website=Hunebedden |access-date=11 April 2022 |language=nl}}</ref> D31 is also located in Exloo, but it is a mess of scattered stone. In 1822, the stones were still in their place.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://www.hunebedden.nl/d31.htm |title=D31 in Hunzebos tussen Exloo en Valthe |website=Hunebedden |access-date=11 April 2022 |language=nl}}</ref>
