**Excepter** is an experimental music group from [Brooklyn](/source/Brooklyn), founded in 2002 by [No-Neck Blues Band](/source/No-Neck_Blues_Band) member John Fell Ryan. They have released their work on labels such as [Load Records](/source/Load_Records) and Animal Collective's [Paw Tracks](/source/Paw_Tracks), and are known for their [improvisational](/source/Improvisation) approach to playing both live and in the studio.

*[The Village Voice](/source/The_Village_Voice)* [alt-weekly](/source/Alternative_weekly) has mentioned the subject of the band's attire, with [blogger](https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Blogger) and (former) *Voice* writer, Nick Sylvester referring to them as having "ousted [Animal Collective](/source/Animal_Collective) as the [Village People](/source/Village_People) of Brooklyn Noise".[1] The significance of their hats was noted several more times.[2] In 2007 the [Pendu Sound](/source/Pendu_Sound_Recordings) compilation album *Getting rid of the glue* with Excepter and [Daniel Carter](/source/Daniel_Carter_(musician)) was listed as number 70 in [Thurston Moore](/source/Thurston_Moore)'s "Top 80 of 2006".[3][4]

Nathan Corbin and Clare Amory participated as drummers in the [Boredoms](/source/Boredoms) [77 Boadrum](/source/77_Boadrum) performance which occurred on July 7, 2007 at the [Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park](/source/Empire-Fulton_Ferry_State_Park) in [Brooklyn, New York](/source/Brooklyn%2C_New_York).[*[citation needed](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)*]

Excepter was featured on the cover of *[The Wire](/source/The_Wire_(magazine))*'s May 2010 issue.[5][6]

Member Clare Amory died of cancer on February 24, 2011.[7]
