'''Ewan''' (also spelled Awan, Euan, Ewen, Awen, Awanne, Owan, Avan) is a Scottish name with multiple sources. It is usually an [anglicisation](/source/anglicisation) of the [Scottish Gaelic](/source/Scottish_Gaelic) name [Eòghann](/source/E%C3%B2ghann) "noble born" and therefore derived ultimately from Latin ''[Eugenius](/source/Eugenius)''. A [Pictish](/source/Pictish) name, ''Uuen'' (or ''Wen'') meaning "(the) warrior",<ref>From Pictland to Alba: 789-1070, Alex Woolf, Edinburgh University Press, 2007</ref> or "born of the mountain",<ref>From Pictland to Alba: 789-1070, Alex Woolf, Edinburgh University Press, 2007</ref> may instead be the source.

If the source is Latin ''Eugenius'', it would make Ewan a cognate of [Welsh](/source/Welsh_language), [Cornish](/source/Cornish_language) and [Breton](/source/Breton_language) names including [Owain](/source/Owain) (Owen) and [Ouen](/source/Ouen). However, these may be older names derived from [Britonnic language](/source/Britonnic_language) words referring to [yew](/source/yew) trees or [ovine](/source/ovine)s.

Another possible more likely source is [Euan](/source/Euan), a Gaelic form of [Latin](/source/Latin) ''[Johannes/Ioannes](/source/Johannes)''. As such it would be a cognate of [Eoin](/source/Eoin), [Ian](/source/Ian) and [John](/source/John_(given_name)).<ref>{{Cite web |last=Sandel |first=Abby |date=2008-11-16 |title=Name of the Day: Ewan |url=https://appellationmountain.net/name-of-the-day-ewan/ |access-date=2025-01-03 |website=Appellation Mountain |language=en-US}}</ref> (''Euan'' is also an alternate name for the Roman god [Bacchus](/source/Bacchus).<ref>{{Cite web|url=http://www.archives.nd.edu/cgi-bin/lookup.pl?stem=euan|title=Latin Word Lookup|website=www.archives.nd.edu}}</ref>)

Ewen is most common as a [male](/source/male) [given name](/source/given_name) in [Scotland](/source/Scotland) and [Canada](/source/Canada){{cn|date=December 2024}}. It is also the source of surnames, mostly connected to [Clan MacEwen](/source/Clan_MacEwen) and including McEwan, Ewan and Ewen. It is after these surnames that [McEwan’s](/source/McEwan%E2%80%99s) Beer and [MacEwan University](/source/MacEwan_University) are named.

In several apocryphal and Gnostic texts, including the Book of Jubilees, the name Ewan/Awan appears as
a daughter of Adam and Eve.
Sometimes described as the sister and wife of Cain under ancient sibling-pairing narratives common in early human genealogies.<ref>Amaru, Betsy Halpern. "The First Woman, Wives, and Mothers in" The Book of Jubilees"." Journal of Biblical literature 113.4 (1994): 609-626.</ref>
