**Eva Mei** (born 3 March 1967) is an Italian [coloratura soprano](/source/Coloratura_soprano).

## Life and career

Eva Mei was born on 3 March 1967 in [Fabriano](/source/Fabriano), Italy.[1] She graduated from the [Conservatorio Luigi Cherubini](/source/Florence_Conservatory) in Florence in 1989.[1][2] In 1990, at the Mozart Competition in Vienna, she won the [Catarina Cavalieri](/source/Catarina_Cavalieri) Prize for her interpretation of Konstanze in Mozart's *[Die Entführung aus dem Serail](/source/Die_Entf%C3%BChrung_aus_dem_Serail)*, an award which led to a contract with the [Vienna State Opera](/source/Vienna_State_Opera) where she performed later that same year.[1] She had previously made her professional opera debut in 1989 as Aspasia in [Antonio Salieri](/source/Antonio_Salieri)'s *[Axur, re d'Ormus](/source/Axur,_re_d'Ormus)* at the opera house in [Siena](/source/Siena).[3]

Mei has performed the role of Donna Anna in *[Don Giovanni](/source/Don_Giovanni)* with the [Zurich Opera](/source/Zurich_Opera) and the [Dutch National Opera](/source/Dutch_National_Opera). She made her debut at the [Hungarian State Opera House](/source/Hungarian_State_Opera_House) as the Queen of the Night in *[The Magic Flute](/source/The_Magic_Flute)*, and her first performance at the [Teatro Carlo Felice](/source/Teatro_Carlo_Felice) in Genoa was as Musetta in *[La bohème](/source/La_boh%C3%A8me)*. At the [Berlin State Opera](/source/Berlin_State_Opera) she performed the role of Violetta in *[La traviata](/source/La_traviata)*, and at the [Bavarian State Opera](/source/Bavarian_State_Opera) she portrayed Norina in *[Don Pasquale](/source/Don_Pasquale)*.[3]

In 1992 Mei appeared as the soprano soloist in [Ludwig van Beethoven](/source/Ludwig_van_Beethoven)'s *[Missa solemnis](/source/Missa_solemnis_(Beethoven))* at the [Salzburg Festival](/source/Salzburg_Festival). In 1993 she made her debuts at [La Scala](/source/La_Scala) as Amenaide in *[Tancredi](/source/Tancredi)*, and as the Queen of the Night at the [Royal Opera House](/source/Royal_Opera_House), [Covent Garden](/source/Covent_Garden). She returned to the latter opera house as Mozart's Konstanze.[3] Other theatres she has performed with on the international stage include the [Rossini Opera Festival](/source/Rossini_Opera_Festival) in Pesaro (1996) and the [Opera Nomori](/source/Opera_Nomori) in Tokyo.[1]

In 1994, Mei performed in *[Norma](/source/Norma_(opera))* as Adalgisa alongside [Jane Eaglen](/source/Jane_Eaglen) in the title role conducted by [Riccardo Muti](/source/Riccardo_Muti) at the [Ravenna Festival](/source/Ravenna_Festival).[4]

In February 2011, she sang the part of Pamina in a new production of *[The Magic Flute](/source/The_Magic_Flute)* premiered at the [Vorarlberger Landestheater](/source/Vorarlberger_Landestheater).[5]

She has worked with the conductors [Roberto Abbado](/source/Roberto_Abbado), [Bruno Campanella](/source/Bruno_Campanella), [Nikolaus Harnoncourt](/source/Nikolaus_Harnoncourt), and [Zubin Mehta](/source/Zubin_Mehta).[1]
