# Eustace Malden

**Eustace Malden** (19 August 1863 – 3 December 1947) was an English [cricketer](/source/Cricket). He played 13 [first-class](/source/First-class_cricket) matches, all but one of them for [Kent County Cricket Club](/source/Kent_County_Cricket_Club), between 1892 and 1893.[1][2][3]

Malden was born at [Brighton](/source/Brighton) in [Sussex](/source/Sussex) in 1863, the son of Clifford and Jane Malden (*[née](/source/N%C3%A9e)* Eley). His father was a [Rector](/source/Rector_(ecclesiastical)) in the [Church of England](/source/Church_of_England), serving at [St Lawrence's Church](/source/St_Lawrence's_Church,_St_Lawrence) in the village of [St Lawrence](/source/St_Lawrence,_Isle_of_Wight) on the [Isle of Wight](/source/Isle_of_Wight).[2][4] He was educated at [Haileybury College](/source/Haileybury_College), where he played cricket in the school team in 1881 and 1882,[3][5] before going up to [Trinity College, Cambridge](/source/Trinity_College,_Cambridge) in 1882. He graduated BA in 1885 and became a teacher, working at [Bengeo](/source/Bengeo) in [Hertfordshire](/source/Hertfordshire) until 1888.[4] He played some cricket for [Hertfordshire](/source/Hertfordshire_County_Cricket_Club) during the late 1880s and also played in minor matches for the Gentlemen of Hampshire in 1885 and [Hampshire](/source/Hampshire_County_Cricket_Club) in 1886.[3][5]

After appearing on one match for the Gentlemen of Kent in May 1892, Malden made his first-class debut for Kent the following month, playing as their [wicket-keeper](/source/Wicket-keeper) in a [County Championship](/source/County_Championship) match at [Gravesend](/source/Bat_and_Ball_Ground) against [Sussex](/source/Sussex_County_Cricket_Club).[3]
