The '''European Throwing Cup''' (known as '''European Cup Winter Throwing''' until 2015) is an annual continental [athletics](/source/athletics_(sport)) competition for athletes specialising in the events of [discus](/source/discus_throw), [javelin](/source/javelin_throw) and [hammer](/source/hammer_throw) throwing and the [shot put](/source/shot_put). The [winter](/source/winter) event, organised every March by the [European Athletics Association](/source/European_Athletics_Association), is intended as a counterbalance to the fact that indoor [track and field](/source/track_and_field) meetings cannot host the longer throwing events. It allows athletes who specialise in throwing events to gauge their form for the forthcoming outdoor athletics season.<ref>[http://www.european-athletics.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=8405&Itemid=2 Final entries confirmed for European Cup Winter Throwing ]{{dead link|date=September 2017 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}. The event was first held in [Nice](/source/Nice), France, in 2001 as the '''European Winter Throwing Challenge'''.<ref>Ventouillac, Marc (2001-03-18).
