Argentine naval officer (1793–1849)

In this [Spanish name](/source/Spanish_name), the first or paternal [surname](/source/Surname) is *Lynch* and the second or maternal family name is *Roo*.

**Estanislao José Antonio Lynch y Roo** (1793–1849),[1] was an [Argentine](/source/Argentina) army officer and businessman, who took part of the [Argentina War of Independence](/source/Argentine_War_of_Independence). Estanislao was the grandson of an [Irish](/source/Irish_people) immigrant, [Patrick Lynch](/source/Patrick_Lynch_(Argentina)), and the third son of [Justo Pastor Lynch](/source/Justo_Pastor_Lynch) (1755–1830) and Ana Bernardo Roo (d. 1836).

## Career

Born in [Buenos Aires](/source/Buenos_Aires), Lynch moved to [Santiago de Chile](/source/Santiago) in 1808, where he studied laws.[1] He became a partner of David DeForest, an American arms trader, sharing 30% of the business.[2] On 2 January 1817 the Buenos Aires city council appointed Estanislao Lynch as major of [Barracas](/source/Barracas%2C_Buenos_Aires).[3] Later that year, Lynch enlisted in the Argentine [Army of the Andes](/source/Army_of_the_Andes), and offered financial and material support to commander-in-chief [Jose de San Martin](/source/Jos%C3%A9_de_San_Mart%C3%ADn). After the army victory at [Chacabuco](/source/Battle_of_Chacabuco), San Martin named him his personal secretary, with the rank of colonel, in February 1818. In 1821, Lynch married [Carmen Solo de Zaldívar y Rivero](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Carmen_Solo_de_Zald%C3%ADvar_y_Rivero&action=edit&redlink=1), a lady from the Chilean high-society just before joining San Martin forces in [their military campaign in Peru](/source/Peruvian_War_of_Independence).[1]

## Family

Eventually, Lynch retired from the army and expanded the family's businesses to [Valparaiso](/source/Valparaiso), Chile, where he settled with his wife[3] and issued:

- Luis Alfredo Lynch, naval officer

- [Patricio Lynch](/source/Patricio_Lynch), appointed Chilean Ambassador to Spain, previously a naval officer in the [Chilean Navy](/source/Chilean_Navy) reaching the rank of admiral.
