# Erwin Elster

**Erwin Elster** (8 May 1887 – 16 April 1977) was a Polish [painter](/source/List_of_Polish_painters), [pedagogue](/source/Pedagogue), and the co-founder of the Society of Artists "Świt" (*Towarzystwa Artystów Plastyków "Świt"*).[1]

Erwin Elster was born in Korszów. He completed his studies at the [Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts](/source/Jan_Matejko_Academy_of_Fine_Arts) in [Kraków](/source/Krak%C3%B3w) between the years of 1907 to 1912; where he was taught by [Wojciech Weiss](/source/Wojciech_Weiss), [Julian Fałat](/source/Julian_Fa%C5%82at), and [Józef Pankiewicz](/source/J%C3%B3zef_Pankiewicz). He completed his artistic studies by which he was awarded one silver medal, and two bronze medals, as well as scholarships to Italy and France. For a year, between 1912 and 1913, he completed his further studies at the [Académie de la Grande Chaumière](/source/Acad%C3%A9mie_de_la_Grande_Chaumi%C3%A8re) in [France](/source/France). After travelling back to [Kraków](/source/Krak%C3%B3w) in 1913, he began his career as an artist, while undertaking his life as a [pedagogue](/source/Pedagogue), where he made his artwork and taught for the next sixty years.[2]

During [World War I](/source/World_War_I) he spent his time in [Bystra](/source/Bystra,_Bielsko_County), where he resided with [Julian Fałat](/source/Julian_Fa%C5%82at). From this time came many of his [watercolour](/source/Watercolour) [impressionist](/source/Impressionist) paintings, as well as his [landscape paintings](/source/Landscape_painting) of the region and its architecture.

Between the years of 1919 to 1954, he lived in [Poznań](/source/Pozna%C5%84) where he taught and made his artwork. He taught painting and drawing at the [University of Fine Arts](/source/University_of_Fine_Arts_in_Pozna%C5%84) in Poznań, and from 1922 at the [Faculty of Architecture](/source/Faculty_of_Architecture_Pozna%C5%84_University_of_Technology) at the [University of Technology](/source/Pozna%C5%84_University_of_Technology) in Poznań.[3] He has also been active with the artists of region, co-founding the Society of Artists "Świt" (*Towarzystwa Artystów Plastyków "Świt"*), in which he exhibited his work since 1927. The first members of *"Świt"* were: [Fryderyk Pautsch](/source/Fryderyk_Pautsch), Adam Ballenstedt, Bronisław Bartel, Wiktor Gosieniecki, Stanisław Jagmin, [Mieczysław Lubelski](/source/Mieczys%C5%82aw_Lubelski), Władysław Roguski, Stefan Sonnewend, and Jan Jerzy Wroniecki.[4] In the 1920s, he had taken part in the [Formalism](/source/Formalism_(art)) movement, and had been part of the [Society of Polish Artists "Sztuka"](/source/Society_of_Polish_Artists_%22Sztuka%22) (*Towarzystwo Artystów Polskich "Sztuka"*). In 1928, he had been part of Poznań's *"Plastyka"*, following which he had also been part of the *"Jednoróg"* (*Cech Artystów Plastyków Jednoróg*), *"Awangarda"* (*Awangarda Krakowska*), and with the [Lwów](/source/Lw%C3%B3w)'s *"Nowa Generacja"*.[5]

After [World War II](/source/World_War_II), he co-founded the [Association of Polish Artists and Designers](/source/Association_of_Polish_Artists_and_Designers) (*Związek Polskich Artystów Plastyków*), he also continued his work as a [pedagogue](/source/Pedagogue), where he was a professor at the [Academy of Fine Arts](/source/Academy_of_Fine_Arts_In_%C5%81%C3%B3d%C5%BA) and the University of Technology in [Łódź](/source/%C5%81%C3%B3d%C5%BA).[6] During [Socialist realism](/source/Socialist_realism), the artist took part in a didactic role.[7]

In 1954, he moved to [Gdańsk](/source/Gda%C5%84sk), where he was a [lecturer](/source/Lecturer) at the [University of Technology](/source/Gda%C5%84sk_University_of_Technology) in Gdańsk. In 1957, he was awarded with the [Knight's Cross](/source/Order_of_Polonia_Restituta) (*Krzyż Kawalerski*). In 1960, he retired as a professor, however he continued to work at the institution. In 1967, for his eightieth birthday and sixty-fifth anniversary of him being an artist, he was given an award by the [Ministry of Culture and National Heritage](/source/Ministry_of_Culture_and_National_Heritage_(Poland)). He died in Gdańsk, on 16 April 1977.[8][9]
