**Errantia** is a diverse group of [marine](/source/Marine_life) [polychaete](/source/Polychaete) worms in the phylum [Annelida](/source/Annelida). Traditionally a [subclass](/source/Subclass_(biology)) of the [paraphyletic](/source/Paraphyletic) class [Polychaeta](/source/Polychaeta),[4] it is currently regarded as a [monophyletic](/source/Monophyletic) group within the larger [Pleistoannelida](/source/Pleistoannelida), composed of Errantia and [Sedentaria](/source/Sedentaria).[2] These worms are found worldwide in marine environments and brackish water.

## Phylogeny

The [phylogeny](/source/Phylogeny) of [polychaetes](/source/Polychaete) is slowly being resolved. Errantia and [Sedentaria](/source/Sedentaria) are the two biggest [clades](/source/Clade) of polychaetes, and together they compose clade [Pleistoannelida](/source/Pleistoannelida).[5] Two groups are nested within Errantia: [Aciculata](/source/Aciculata) ([Eunicida](/source/Eunicida) + [Phyllodocida](/source/Phyllodocida)) and [Protodriliformia](/source/Protodriliformia) ([small](/source/Progenesis) meiofaunal worms such as the [Protodrilida](/source/Protodrilida)).[6][3][2]

Historically, the order [Amphinomida](/source/Amphinomida) was part of this subclass. However, [phylogenetic analyses](/source/Phylogenetic_analyses) place [Amphinomida](/source/Amphinomida) inside a basal clade with [Sipunculida](/source/Sipunculida) and *[Lobatocerebrum](https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Lobatocerebrum&action=edit&redlink=1)*, and this clade is the [sister group](/source/Sister_group) to [Pleistoannelida](/source/Pleistoannelida).[3]

Some [taxa](/source/Taxon), such as [Spintheridae](/source/Spintheridae) and [Myzostomida](/source/Myzostomida), are still difficult to place due to their long branching, but they likely belong to either Errantia or [Sedentaria](/source/Sedentaria).[3]

## Classification

### Historical

Errantia is, along with [Sedentaria](/source/Sedentaria), one of the two old orders of the [paraphyletic](/source/Paraphyletic) class "[Polychaeta](/source/Polychaeta)". In 1977 the zoologist Kristian Fauchald split Errantia into three orders: [Phyllodocida](/source/Phyllodocida), [Amphinomida](/source/Amphinomida) and [Eunicida](/source/Eunicida), giving way to this classification.[7]
