Simson was halfback and captain of [Edinburgh University RFC](/source/Edinburgh_University_RFC). He made his [Scotland](/source/Scotland_national_rugby_union_team) debut in the 1902 [Calcutta Cup](/source/Calcutta_Cup) at Inverleith and played every possible match until his retirement in 1907, gaining 17 caps.<ref>{{cite news |title=E.
