He was elected a [Fellow of the Royal Society](/source/Fellow_of_the_Royal_Society) in 1895<ref>{{Cite journal | last1 = d. | first1 = W. C. On his maternal side he was a descendant of the 17th-century admiral [Robert Blake](/source/Robert_Blake_(admiral)).

Griffiths was appointed principal of the [University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire](/source/University_College_of_South_Wales_and_Monmouthshire), [Cardiff](/source/Cardiff) in 1901<ref>"A Community and its University", Dai Smith and Meic Stephens (Eds.), University of Wales Press 2005, p. 39.</ref> and given a professorship in [experimental philosophy](/source/experimental_philosophy).
