He was elected to the [Swiss Federal Council](/source/Swiss_Federal_Council) on 11 December 1919 and handed over office on 31 December 1928. He was affiliated with the [Free Democratic Party](/source/Free_Democratic_Party_of_Switzerland). 

During his office time he held the [Federal Department of Home Affairs](/source/Federal_Department_of_Home_Affairs) and he was [President of the Confederation](/source/President_of_the_Swiss_Confederation) in 1924.
