Born in [Fiume](/source/Fiume) (later Rijeka) as '''Erik''', he was forced by the fascist phobia for the foreign culture to change his name.<ref name=obit>{{cite news|title=Addio al direttore della fotografia Erico Menczer|url=http://www.blitzquotidiano.it/cinema/addio-al-direttore-della-fotografia-erico-menczer-1157389/|accessdate=22 December 2013|newspaper=Blitz|date=15 March 2012}}</ref>  At the end of the Second World War, when the city of [Fiume](/source/Fiume) became Yugoslav, he first moved to [Padua](/source/Padua), then to [Genoa](/source/Genoa), and finally to [Rome](/source/Rome), where he began his film career.<ref name="obit"/>
